REACH
Beyond Domestic Violence
Annual Meeting
REACH's Annual Meeting took place on May 17, 2007
at the Massachusetts Medical Society in Waltham.
We had the wonderful opportunity to hear Middlesex
District Attorney Gerry Leone speak about his ideas for and experiences
with addressing domestic violence through the court system. As
noted in his keynote address, domestic violence is a complex issue
that won’t be overcome without a collective effort. The
D.A. outlined bold initiatives in his office to build a systematic
approach to domestic violence cases, including strong approaches
to enforcing restraining orders and child support laws; not delaying
justice by allowing cases to be sent to probate court or approving
baseless cross complaints; and making use of existing Certified
Batterer’s Programs. His office is working to build stronger
relationships with diverse populations, particularly immigrant
communities who may be wary of seeking help through the legal
system. The District Attorney’s personal story of prosecuting
a 1998 homicide case in Waltham reminds us that we must do more
to provide help to those “caught in the web of domestic
violence.” His work on behalf of survivors shows that we
have a strong ally in this effort.
District Attorney Leone's speech was followed by
a demonstration of the Silent Witness Exhibit and the presentation
of the annual Voice for Justice Awards. The following award recipients
were recognized for their outstanding efforts towards breaking
the devastating cycle of violence: Detective Anne Marie Browne
of the Burlington Police Department, Merle Kushner of Lahey Clinic,
and two dedicated REACH volunteers who have kept their commitment
to survivors over the years, Sue Layman and Debbie Leeman. Each
of these women has made a difference in the lives of survivors.
Karen, who shared her story of survival so eloquently, reminds
us how important this work is.
Many thanks to our generous host and sponsor, Massachusetts
Medical Society, for making this evening possible.
