In an Emergency

If you are at home and you are being threatened or attacked:

  • Stay away from the kitchen (the abuser can find weapons such as knives to harm you).
  • Stay away from bathrooms or closets where the abuser can trap you.
  • Get to a room with a door or window to escape.
  • Call 911 right away.
  • Identify a neighbor or friend you can go to for help.
  • When police officers arrive, tell them what happened in detail. Get names and badge numbers.
  • Get medical help if you're hurt in any way.
  • Take pictures of bruises or injuries; document how you received the injury.
  • Call a domestic violence program for help in making a safety plan.
