Another Successful Reach for the Stars Gala!
Our 10th Annual Reach for the Stars Gala was held on Saturday October 19 at The Castle at the Boston Park Plaza. Despite the unexpected, last-minute venue change due to the federal government shutdown, and holding our event on the same night the Red Sox played (and won!) Game Six of the American League Championship Series, we had a full room of 300 guests and raised more than $300,000.
We found great comfort that evening in knowing we were among family, advocates, and new supporters committed to building healthy communities by ending domestic violence.
We were thrilled to have J.C. Monahan from Chronicle as our emcee. We honored Former Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone, now Partner at Nixon Peabody, who has been a prominent leader and advocate for domestic violence survivors. Leone talked about everyone's role in breaking down "Barriers Against Disclosure" that so many survivors face.
Mandy, a participant in REACH's Hope Project, shared her inspirational story with the crowd:
"REACH came in and facilitated groups at my treatment program. In these groups we would openly speak about domestic violence, we learned about red flags, why women stay, and the warning signs of an abusive person. REACH worked with me individually as well. They stood by my side during court and gave me the support I needed.
"REACH helped me do a lot of soul searching and learn more about domestic violence. It taught me that as much guilt as I had that it wasn't my fault. They taught me how to care about myself again. I found out that just because I felt alone didn't mean that I was alone. It gave me a safe place to go and a safe place to talk. It was REACH where I found hope for a better life. I realized that I didn't have to live this way and that I am good enough and strong enough to find happiness. Today I continue to use the tools that REACH gave me. I am confident that I can protect myself and my children. I no longer have to live in fear. Today I have a voice."
Your support - as sponsors, in-kind donors, members of the event committee, board of directors, and guests - makes it possible for Mandy and others to access these services. Thanks to Liberty Bay Credit Union, who donated their services as well as credit card fees, every dollar you donated that night went directly to REACH. We thank all of our supporters for standing with us in our efforts to end domestic violence.
